3. Brits Concoct Sitcom Formula - Zap2it

Pilcher and her team analyzed two decades' worth of British comedies and came up with a formula that looks like this: [((R x D + V) x F) + S]/A. Pilcher explains to the paper:

"Comedic value is determined by multiplying the recognizability of the main character (R) by their delusions of grandeur (D). This is added to the verbal wit of the script (V), and the total is multiplied by the amount someone falls over or suffers a physical injury (F).

"The difference in social status between the highest- and lowest-ranking characters (S) is added, and finally the total is divided by the success of any scheme or stratagem in the show (A). Each term in the formula is assigned a value up to a maximum of 10 to give an overall scientific score."

My friend made four of these question blocks. The low-reaching set (it was hung on a tree hanging over a sidewalk, just at jumping height) is now gone, and we think that it was the one with the fire flower and the one-up mushroom in it. I hope that the person who picked it up is not a criminal, because it could make things difficult for the police!

Sea Forts

I saw for the first time pictures of the Maunsell Army Sea Forts (via Things, where you can find more links). These things are so cool I'm a little upset I haven't known about them longer. They're like structures from Myst. I'm especially fascinated by the little variations between them. Why don't they look the same? So peculiar...

During the Second World War, three anti-aircraft forts were built in 1941-42 to protect the Thames Estuary, designed by Mr. G. A. Maunsell. Four other larger structures were built for the Navy.

The Army forts were different in design from the Navy platforms as each had seven towers linked together by walkways. Six of the towers were armed, the seventh held the searchlights and they were manned by a complement of 120. They were built in 1942 at Shivering Sands, Red Sands and Great Nore. Each 300 tonne tower was preconstructed before being towed out to sea, sunk into position and then connected to the next tower.

After the war, the forts were abandoned and Great Nore was demolished in 1958. Red Sand Fort which is off the coast at Whitstable was used in the 1960's as a pirate radio station. Three other forts of similar design were built in the Mersey to protect Liverpool.

Not really, but wouldn't it be fun? I wonder how many people would just decide email isn't worth it? [I was going to link to a certain professor who has rationalized swearing off email--and has enjoyed every second of it--but I can't remember his name. Some help?]

Social network analyzer for Enron's emails
When Enron was hit with lawsuits, the prosecution required the company to turn over the incriminating emails it had it its database through a legal process called discovery. Usually a company undergoing this kind of discovery carefully combs through its email and publishes only those messages that are relevant to the case, eliminating its employees' private messages and confidential material otherwise not related to the case.

However, Enron opted to save money by just dumping all of its email online, employee love-letters and all. This was bad for employee privacy, but good for social network researchers.

Jeffrey Heer at UC Berkeley has produced "enronic," a system for visualizing the relationships between Enron employees based on who emailed whom and how often. It's a Java applet that you can download and mess around with -- you can even take a turn at sleuthing out hidden participants in the scam by trying your own social network analysis.

How do you celebrate the 100th anniversary of Jules Verne's death?

Residents of Nantes, France woke to a space capsule crashed into a smoking pile of rubble in the central square of the city. Later that day, a giant animatronic elephant and entourage of the Sultan paraded into town to visit the mayor.

Then, on saturday, the capsule opened to reveal a giant animatronic girl who walked through the streets, mischievously sewed a row of parked cars to the street with a shipping Hauser rope, rode a scooter, and even asked that the crowd give her some privacy while she used the toilet.

Bizarro Supergirl

Dave Devries takes kids' drawings and renders them as full-color paintings. The monsters are very cool, but the superhero transformations are creepy. Gotta wonder what the kids think of their badly deformed superheroes.
