contravertisement, or "rant"
I just did my taxes using H&R Block's online service, which costs $30 for federal, $20 per state (I had two). I hated it. Don't use it. I looked at TurboTax, but it couldn't handle multi-state filing. TurboTax looks decent. H&R Block's interview was buggy, obtuse and confoundingly non-automatic. I had to retype a lot information from federal to state to state. Actually, it's worse than that: the first state return I filed used the W-2 numbers I'd put in before ("It's ok to leave this box blank. We'll get your numbers automatically from the information you provided with the federal return."), but the second state form just left it blank, throwing off my tax by $900. I got repeated server errors in IE, so I switched to Firefox, but the popup help didn't work (small, empty white IFRAME's appeared, and I had to right-click/open in frame in new window to read the help messages). Oh, and the help text itself was absurd. Simple yes/no questions, which should be "Tip: did you know...?", are put up as links for no reason, (e.g. Can I file in more than one state? [click-open new window-load] Yes. [close window]), and definitions of important terms are sometimes completely absent. One of the interview questions was, "Was this an IRA/SEP distribution or a traditional rollover?" There were no FAQ links in the help box, and none of the words was linked to a definition. I opened the general help window, and all I could find were official IRS publications. That was telling, actually, since I can understand IRS language better than H&R Block's oversimplified wording. In the end I Googled all my questions.
