The truck is hydrogen-powered and creates its own fuel from solar energy and water, a technical feat that rivals the advanced technology being researched by major auto companies and universities. The four-cylinder engine is tuned to run on hydrogen, which is produced by a hand-built electrolysis system mounted in the bed.

Less than $10,000 to build, travels a few miles. So, um, what's taking the auto industry so long?

Google continues to alter reality

Previewed recently (but not available to the masses yet): Google Print. Something like Amazon's "let's scan every page in the world and put it online" mission, but at the scale of Google.

But if you can't wait for Google Print, try Google SMS: write queries to 46645 (GOOGL) and get search results sent back to your phone within a minute. Business listings, prices, answers to maddening trivia that you absolutely must have while on a road trip...

Art Party

I had my doubts about the TWA Terminal-as-gallery, but now that the Port Authority Shuts Art Exhibit in Aftermath of Rowdy Party, I think it kicks ass. (Talk about a party: a co-worker of mine went to the show, got drunk with friends and ended up flying to Puerto Rico for the weekend.) But that's probably the last time things will go down that way. Cue the security guards.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has shut down an art exhibition in Terminal 5 of Kennedy Airport after a raucous opening-night party on Friday that left broken glass on the floor, graffiti on the walls and further destruction in its wake, the agency said yesterday.

Too close to my idea

Anheuser-Busch releases Sweet! Caffeinated, ginseng beer. That's all kinds of gross, plus it's difficult and dorky to say, "B to the e power" (spelled "B(E)").

Now I must move faster on my patent for caffeinated pizza. People don't want uppers with their downers, they want late-night food and energy. First, I have to develop a recipe for coffee bean sausage...

Life imitates... life?

Beddoe isn't the only one in the computer security world casting an envious eye over the bioinformatics sector's research. Dan Kaminsky, senior security consultant for Avaya, said he has been investigating using genomic pattern analysis for identifying and clustering "mutant" machines on a corporate network: PCs whose variation from the company's standard installation might make them vulnerable to compromise.

Kaminsky thinks this is only the beginning for the spread of bioinformatics ideas into other fields.

"Generating an ordered, hierarchal breakdown of interrelationships from huge piles of information is a problem that crops up everywhere. I'm not surprised to see bioinformatics solutions finally being applied to the rest of our poorly understood, oversized networks."

On the biology end, Terry Gaasterland, associate professor of computational genomics at Rockefeller University, agrees that there's a wide field of uses for the algorithms her discipline has developed -- and tricks to be learned by biologists from other fields, too.

"The problem of decoding the language of networks and the problem of finding signals in DNA are really two related instances of machine learning problems. We're almost bound to discover universal principles of information communication by investigating both," she said.
