One for the Encyclopedia of Imaginary Places

I do love my maps, especially of imaginary places and concepts. Here's the Guide to Springfield USA (posted on /. so there may be some delay loading). Ridiculously thorough. It's even been added to the Harvard Map Collection. I kinda wish it were rendered as an aquatint, though.

Funny, I don't recall ever seeing a design for a Spiral Stair Slide in any of my architecture studios, even the intro-intro ones. Is it just too silly? Sure looks like a lot of fun. And wood, too; that makes it, um, elegant.

I don't know if you've been following the news lately, but it just kinda got away from us. Somewhere between the gold rush of easy internet profits and an arrogant sense of endless empire, we heard kind of a pinging noise, and uh, then the damn thing just died on us. So I apologize.

But here's the good news. You fix this thing, you're the next greatest generation, people. You do this--and I believe you can--you win this war on terror, and Tom Brokaw's kissing your ass from here to Tikrit, let me tell ya. And even if you don't, you're not gonna have much trouble surpassing my generation. If you end up getting your picture taken next to a naked guy pile of enemy prisoners and don't give the thumbs up you've outdid us.

The ending is particularly good, too.

smug sex

What's even funnier than Harvard's sex magazine, Hbomb (see Ray's post, below)? Harvard Lampoon's satire of it. Except that the Lampoon's version is INTENTIONALLY funny. I like that the images in the Lampoon's version prominently feature single, disembodied faces in the throes of pleasure. It obliquely makes the point that such self-satisfied sex is, effectively, masturbation--which comprises the majority of sex at Harvard, anyway.

I was browsing America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places 2003 (National Trust for Historical Preservation), looking for interesting structures that I might try to visit, and there among the tobacco barns of Maryland and the Nine-Mile Canyon of 10,000 Native American rock images is the entire state of Vermont:

The distinctive characteristics that define Vermont -- historic towns, villages and rural landscapes -- could be lost if sprawl-type development is allowed to occur in a haphazard, out-of-scale, land-consuming manner. The one-size-fits-all big-box "template" has proven to be detrimental to communities across the United States because of its negative economic and environmental impact on historic downtowns and local businesses. The size and design of these stores often overwhelm their surroundings, and impersonal corporate identity too often trumps community character.

Kinsey

Have a look at the amazing work of LA artist Dave Kinsey. Kinsey is a young grad of the Art Institutes of Atlanta and Pittsburgh who uses the urban environment as a site for his pieces, which combine social commentary with vibrant, powerful compositions. Kinsey's sticker sets were also some of the best work on display at the IdN Expo in Singapore last week...
