Leaky pipe exposed as source of 'rare wetland'. 05/03/2004. ABC News Online

A Taipei wetland looked upon as an urban rarity and the pride and joy of a local school has been exposed as nothing more than the result of a leaking water pipe.

Students at the Kung-kuan Elementary School in Taipei have highly valued the wetland within their campus for almost three decades.
The school recently received a grant from education authorities to turn the wetland into an ecology park, or a habitat to house butterflies and insects.

Local newspapers report the embarrassment surfaced when water authorities checked the school's pipes and found the leak.
Since then, the wetland fountain has stopped gushing and the school has found that its monthly water bill has dropped five-fold.

So much irony.

What Nature Intended

Low Carb Meat Tortillas

You may soon be able to feast on tortillas without worrying about the carbohydrates. Researchers at the University of Florida have just developed an all-meat, low carb tortilla. It's called a Flaquita, meaning skinny ones in Spanish... Maybe because people can eat it to try and stay skinny, or maybe just because it's so flat.

Flaquitas are made by turning chicken or fish into paste, then flattening it into a circle. The thin, soupy pancakes then go into the oven and come out as tortillas. Researchers say they can be flavored and colored just like any other food. Testers say they taste great, no matter the flavor.

Now c'mon. That's disgusting.

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash) -- The metrosexual movement may have gone too far -- now, straight guys are trying to dance with each other instead of women.

According to the upcoming issue of 'Stuff' magazine, the hottest dance trend in New York clubs is 'gancing,' a term for when guys boogie oogie oogie together.

One popular 'gance step' features one guy pretending to be a shark while his pal runs away in fright. Another manly move has the guys pretending to be kangaroos complete with pouches and Fosters beer.

It sounds gay but editor Bill Schulz says gancing is actually a carefully choreographed way that straight guys use to meet women.

In fact, one Manhattan travel agent says he gets more phone numbers from ladies from doing a dance routine where he pretends to give birth to a pal than he ever did hanging out at the bar.

Yes, it is true... we, too, have a new dog. His name is Pablo. He's half Great Dane, and half German Shepherd (German Dane?), although no one can see anything but Great Dane in him. We adopted him from a local nursery. As far as we can tell, he's going to be absolutely HUGE. When we got him, he was under fifteen pounds, and in the last 5 weeks he's grown to the proportions of a mid-size Labrador. He's about three months old.
He's also staggeringly lazy. My current favorite past-time is to yell "release the hounds!!!" and watch him do nothing. Once in a while, he wakes, gets excited, and bites his own ass. Below are representative images of his "Three Modes": 1.) lethargic, 2.) slightly less lethargic, and 3.) manically imitating a celtic rune.

If you look through the celebrity architects' renderings you get an amusing (and then irritating) cartoonized portfolio. OMA is overly OMA, Holl is overly Holl, even Jerde is SuperJerde. And all of them seem to be cribbing from past work, to an embarrassing degree. Well, who's got time to design when you're building so damn fast?

Resembling some of Mr. Calatrava's sculptures, but on a titanic scale of 835 feet, the tower would rise over the East River at South and Fletcher Streets, near the South Street Seaport and the Brooklyn Bridge. The developer, Frank J. Sciame, estimated its completion in 2006 or 2007.

It will be very expensive to build - just how expensive the developer will not say - and very expensive for prospective owners. But then again, Mr. Sciame said, "you only need between 12 and 24 interested parties in the entire world."

Crazy.

The main concept of DELCA is to create artificial intelligent assisting agents, with whom the user can fluently conversate and communicate.

These agents are better known as Ghosts.

The Ghosts are not only able to talk and think like human beings, but they are also emotional and sensitive spirits. The Ghosts have feelings and highly complex sets of behaviours.

Each Ghost has a distinct personality and history, and apparently they can learn, even compete with each other to be popular among the, uh, living. Here's the Ghost name PrinterJan:

Characteristics: Former RankXerox service consultant with an Easteuropean background. Inventor of the now famous butt-copy practical joke back in 1964. Lost his job due to an accident in 1973 when the glass broke under his substantial weight. Unable to sit or sleep for 2 months after the accident, he passed out from a heartattack. Holds an unlimited access to all computer printer manuals in the world, which he knows forwards and backwards.

History: Muse was the victim of her parents desire to raise a wonder child. By the age of 6 she could forcefully play No. 3 Piano Sonata by Chopin. By the age of 13 she had no friends. By the age of 17 she had no life. By the age of 21 she decided to enjoy life ... the after life.

Another company that does this quite shamelessly is Bess Eaton donuts. This has sparked some enthusiastic and frankly stupid web debate (which alerted me to the fact that there is such a thing as "atheist logic." Must've missed it before. Now I'll be more vigilant.):

This is for all of you out there who dislike that Bess Eaton and other companies who put religious slogans on their products. I recently read the "What the Atheist Thinks" column, regarding Bess Eaton Donuts and I analyzed the "logic" of Mr. Quarters and here is what I found.

First we start with the fact that Bess Eaton puts Bible verses on their coffee cups. This is a true statement. I recently purchased a coffee there and it did indeed have a bible verse on it. Now, by using Mr. Quarters' logic, he derives from the fact that Bess Eaton Donuts puts Bible Verses on their coffee cups that they are saying that "it's best if you're a member of [Christianity]" and they are therefore promoting what they believe in.

Mr. Quarters then states that this is "arrogant and offensive" and yet he agrees that they have every right to put those verses on their cups. However, because he declares this practice as "arrogant and offensive" he concludes that it is an unethical practice. So from the fact that Bess Eaton puts bible verses on their coffee cups, using atheist logic, it is an unethical practice. That's the atheist's logic. Well, let's see what happens when we apply this logic to something else: Mr. Quarters' column along with the recent letter agreeing with Mr. Quarters about Bess Eaton. Here it goes:

Mr. Quarters writes a column regarding his atheist views. That is a true statement. Now, according to atheist "logic", by writing his column he is promoting what he believes in, which, again by atheist "logic" must be "arrogant and offensive." Now, I will state that he has every right to write columns regarding atheism. However, since it is "arrogant and offensive" it must be unethical.

So, in conclusion, since columns are written regarding Atheism, that practice is unethical. Now I must ask, is writing about something you believe in unethical? According to what I like to call "correct" logic, it is obviously not. Therefore there is nothing wrong with Bess Eaton or any other company putting religious slogans on their merchandise and no one should have a problem with it.

Personally, I think the most egregious and insulting factor is not the Jesusy propaganda--after all, we're getting used to that here in the Bush--but rather the name "Bess Eaton." And the fact that someone was paid to come up with it.

Now that I think about it, most of the architects I know aren't terribly good drivers nor even care about cars. It's embarrassing, though, to find architects as a group in the top five for accidents, speeding tickets and moving violations.

But many insurance executives, Finnegan said, assume highly educated professionals such as doctors, lawyers and architects are less likely to be risky drivers -- exactly the opposite of what the review found. (Engineers, by the way, ranked 10th among the 40 professions analyzed, with a higher-than-average accident rate of 94 per 1,000 professionals.)

Finnegan can't say exactly why these professions rose to the top of the smash-up pile, but he has some theories.

"Anything we say is speculative," Finnegan said, "but these tend to be highly educated professionals . . . who are used to having the world pay attention to them."

In other words, the very traits that may help doctors, lawyers and architects in their professions -- call it confidence, or self-assurance, or downright arrogance -- make them riskier on the road.

There could be other explanations as well, such as huge workloads leading to fatigue or excessive cell phone use on the road.

Interestingly, doctors and lawyers fell to the middle of the pack when Finnegan looked at speeding tickets and moving violations. Architects, however, remained at the top of all three.

I've often seen the phrase "collector's edition" and wondered who exactly these "collectors" are. I wondered if they actually exist, or if the idea of them was just invoked to add mythical value to otherwise useless commodities. Does anyone actually "collect" frosted fake cut-glass Pluto Nash mugs from McDonald's? Do these things appreciate in value? I wonder no more. Here's an astounding example of a community of collectors who are actually obsessed with Disney's Tigger, that lamentable ancestor of Jar-Jar Binks'.

N-Grate

I was given the Nokia N-Gage as a gift, and I was actually vaguely relieved when a kid in Cape Town stole it out of the trunk of my car. It's not a bad phone, nor a bad game console--but the designers placed the earpiece and microphone along the spine of the phone, leading to the phenom known as side-talkin'. Basically, the person using the N-Gage looks as if they are talking into the side of a taco. This gag site has some amusing pics, but it also has an annoying soundtrack--so be sure to turn the volume down...
